Simon and Schuster ISBN 9781847385987

Anna and Suzanne are friends and neighbours. They are both delighted when Suzanne's family are left a dog by a great-aunt but they are in for a big disappointment when Beatrice arrives. She is very old and very slow. However the children set out to turn Beatrice into what they see as a real dog before Suzanne's father can send Beatrice to the same place he sent their last dog. But can they really deal with so many problems? This is the latest book from this super writer who shows great understanding of life from a child's point of view. It is a heart-warming story about friends and responsibilities - and it is very funny!

Secret of the Shadows by Cathy MacPhail
Bloomsbury ISBN 9781408812686

Tyler is spending the summer holidays sorting out her grandmother's house near the sea. She is sad about her grandmother's death but is happy to spend time helping - until she becomes aware of an icy feeling in her bedroom. She feels sure that a terrible secret lurks in that room and she sets out to find out more about the history of the house. However she discovers that not everyone is willing to talk about what they know. This book is very well written with a lovely setting. The story is gripping and at times spine-chilling - a real page-turner.
