The Great Hamster Massacre by Katie Davies
Simon and Schuster ISBN 9781847385956

Anna and Tom have always wanted a pet so they begin a pester campaign. Their mother has her own reasons why she doesn't want them to have a pet...but she finally gives in. Their delight in owning some hamsters soon turns to sadness and horror when they discover the massacre of the title. The story, seen from a child's perspective, is both amusing and moving but this book is beautifully written throughout.
